Day 32
Today was the most amazing day of my life to date! I met a legendary pokemon, Latias! And what seemed to be her brother, Latios! And tried out Mega Evolution for the first time; it was the most exhilarating experience I've ever imagined. With that excitement out of the way, let's try to be cohesive in our journal now.

So I was on Route 118 after lunch, had just crossed the river with Mickey and fought those reporters again. Dan was getting used to his new size and preformed alright, learning Iron Tail during battle since he has a small tail now. And Mickey evolved into a nearly 5 foot tall mudfish with surprising strength. He looks so very intimidatingly awesome now.

It was shortly after the fight, just getting off that shoreline, that I ran into Steven Stone and the really strange stuff started happening. It began typically; 'hey how are you, nice swampert, what's your favorite type' kinda stuff and exchanging words on the pros and cons of multi- and single-type training. We were about to go our separate ways again. Then latios appeared. I don't know how to describe this pokemon any better than a person-sized blue plane. Steven seemed intrigued by its arrival; I was perplexed. Based on latios' behavior, we both suspected latios sought us out, and wanted us on his back. Mickey seemed very hesitant, but I called him into his ball and went anyways.

Latios took us to an island I couldn't find on the map after we landed. Steven voiced what I had been feeling, that the island had an unsettling, almost dream-like quality. I wonder if it was an illusion. Steven was concerned there might be a dangerous element on the island, based upon a fable of two legendary pokemon residing on an island such as this one to guard a secret about Mega Evolution. I decided to take out Mickey and utilize his vigilance to keep us safe.

The island had a variety of waterfalls cutting its cliff ridden shore into sections, and a forest deeper within. It was beautiful and surreal, and I wonder if the fairy tales of my youth had an effect on how the island appeared before me. But for all the beauty, I was still unnerved. Just outside the forest a voice spoke to me. "Those whose memories fade seek to carve them in their hearts." Steven didn't show any sign of hearing the voice, so I was very anxious about the whole island at that point. It was creepy despite the soft and chiming quality of the voice. Mickey seemed to hear it too, though, and smiled at me, before reaching for my hand. His three thick fingers were slimy and smooth in my hand, but comforting nonetheless. We pressed on.

We came to a clearing on the edge of a plateau, holding a pedestal of white stone and another plane like pokemon (this time a light red color) resting in the grass, seeming to await us. Steven was awestruck by latias, comparing the pokemon's beauty with a sun stone. Then seemed to change his mind and asked if I thought a dawn stone was a more accurate analogy. I shrugged. Gemstones aren't my thing, how would I know? Either way, he thought she was as fantastic as any steel type.

It was a wonderful moment for everyone, and then Team Aqua showed up. One of them was just a grunt, but the other was a shirtless hulk of a man calling himself Matt. He was apparently an Admin and had heard the news of what I'd done at Mount Chimney. He came for latias and a mega stone, wanting that power for Team Aqua. Apparently he hadn't read the full report on what I was capable of because he then offered for me to step aside or be pulverized. Mickey immediately put himself between us in response to the threat, growling. I smirked. Matt laughed. I told him exactly what was about to happen. He thought it was a bluff.

Steven sent out a Metang to help, this strange steel pokemon with two clawed hands and a discus body that never touched the ground. The grunt had a grimer and Matt threw out a sharpedo. I'm starting to wonder if sharpedo is the team mascot. I took advantage of Mickey's type and mud bombed the grimer, which apparently metang had wanted to use psychic on; instead it tried psychic on sharpedo to no effect. Mickey caused a rock slide to fall from one of the cliffs overlooking the plateau, ending sharpedo.

Matt was astounded by the display of power Mickey and I wielded; I was astounded Mickey had the strength to topple a cliff. He claimed a deep respect for that power we had, but promised vengeance the next time we met. I mockingly wished him good luck and threatened another rock slide if he did not withdraw.

Why a legendary pokemon wanted our help against those buffoons I don't know, but latias trusted me after this battle it seemed. I certainly didn't trust Steven much anymore. He seemed tough before, but that display of ineptitude... perhaps I've just fought one too many sharpedos to know they are a dark type and psychic wouldn't have worked. I'll be wary of him in the future.

Latias revealed that it had been holding a mega stone in its hand the whole time, protecting it. The pokemon held the stone out to me, and when I reached out and touched the slender clawed hand I felt a rush of thoughts in my mind; latias wanted to come with me, to help me on my journey and defend Hoenn from nefarious peoples. I knew, just knew without explanation, that latios had been holding her back, waiting for a trainer competent enough to be her companion and guardian in this quest. I had apparently passed the test.

Steven noticed the mega stone as well, and handed me a large steel bracelet inset with a small, glittering stone that was way to small for the jewelry it was embedded in. He called it a key stone. When I asked what it was made of, he told me he had no clue, startlingly, but he did know it was integral to the phenomenon of mega evolution. He gave me a tutorial on how to achieve mega evolution, explaining that it only seemed to work during battle, and the pokemon had to hold the species-specific mega stone while I possessed a key stone. Together -and most interestingly to me, only if our bonds are close enough- they achieved Mega Evolution, increasing the pokemon's power for the duration of the fight.

In the field, mega evolution is understood: you like pokemon, they like you, together with the stones your friendship manifests into nigh-unstoppable power. Steven explained that the mechanics, the underlying methods by which this is achieved, exactly HOW your bond turns into such power were the mysteries. They are mysteries I most definitely intend to solve, as this seems to be the penultimate subject of study of pokemon-human relationships. I could pioneer this research and become as well known as Professor Oak!

When we got back to Route 118, it was early evening. I was so overwhelmed with excitement about what I learned I couldn't contain myself and ran into the tall grass to find pokemon to test out latias' mega evolution. I felt the power surge through my very soul as latias became engulfed in a sphere of energy and evolved. Looking back her evolution was anticlimactic; her arms became jet engine wings and she was purple now, and not much else. The power was immense though, and that electrike didn't stand a chance. Crap, I just realized the regulations won't allow me to catch a pokemon on that route now. That was stupid. Ah well.

Anyways, I had to let latias go. After seeing all that power, I realized I couldn't fairly use her on my journey. We only just met and she already trusted me, so there was little growth to study there. And it would be massively unfair to the gyms and route trainers if I had a legendary on my team. It just wouldn't be right. I thanked her for the opportunity to bond with her though; she understood. As she flew off I heard that voice in my head again. "All dreams are but another reality. Never forget..."

I supposed I should also mention that I have a secret base now on route 110. That tree was perfect. I'd spent the morning arranging furniture bought in Slateport. Ironically, there is a sign posted next to it that was vandalized with spray paint. I can't read the original sign but it now states "Team Aqua was here." Makes me smile every time.

Looking back on today, it does feel like a dream. But around my neck now hangs a silver teardrop pendant with the keystone set in the center; I don't like bracelets, especially ginormous steel ones. I noticed it had instruments within it, so after the jeweler in Mauville made me the necklace, I didn't throw it out. I think I can still get data by proximity alone from within my bag. Now the real field work begins.

This is currently my favorite picture in the series. I've been waiting practically since the beginning to draw it and I love how it has turned out. Hope y'all enjoyed the extra reading today. And whoo for Nick showing up in two consecutive pictures. I'll probably start drawing him more in the future.
